Program Descriptions

The Bachelor of applied Statistics and Planning at the Faculty of Economics is a five-year tri-
semester undergraduate program designed to develop highly skilled professionals in statistical
analysis, quantitative research, and data-driven planning. The program combines strong
mathematical foundations, statistical theory, computational techniques, and applied problem-
solving to prepare graduates for dynamic careers in industry, government, research, and
development sectors.

Students study core subjects such as descriptive statistics, probability, calculus, and linear algebra,
followed by advanced topics including regression analysis, econometrics, multivariate methods,
time series, stochastic processes, demography, survey design, monitoring and evaluation, and

project planning. These topics are reinforced through hands-on training in statistical software such
as SPSS, Stata, R, and Excel, as well as coursework in programming and data management –
ensuring graduates are proficient in modern computational and analytical techniques.

Background and Rationale

2.1 Context

Somalia occupies a critical position in which statistics and planning are essential for economic recovery, good governance, job creation, and sustainable development. The Somali government, NGOs, and private sector increasingly demand accurate data analysis, economic modeling, and evidence-based planning. However, there is a shortage of structured programs producing skilled statisticians and planners capable of addressing these needs.

2.2 Rationale

Evidence-Based Development: Somalia’s development policies require reliable data and statistical expertise. Youth Empowerment: With 70% of the Somali population under 30, it is critical to build a skilled workforce in data-driven decision-making. Labor Market Demand: Expanding opportunities for statisticians in government, NGOs, financial institutions, healthcare, and private sector data analytics.

Policy Alignment: The program is aligned with Somalia’s NDP-9, Agenda 2063, and the SDGs.

University Strategy: SIMAD University emphasizes scientific research, innovation, and digital transformation as fundamental pillars.

Program Objectives

The BSc in Statistics and Planning aims to:
